Personality:
For the lead singer of a band, which would be a relatively normal job for anyone else, 2D has gone through quite a bit over the years. But Gorillaz isn't exactly a normal band, and his life certainly seems to reflect that. From car accidents to kidnappings to being eaten by a whale and everything in between, the poor guy's had it rough. It takes a certain kind of strength to really survive all of this and keep on going. Or maybe it's just dumb luck.
2D's never necessarily been a genius; even before Murdoc hit him he didn't have much in the way of plans with his life, after all, and he was known for staring off into space. To add to that, he's always been somewhat accident-prone... even if the accident has nothing to do with him, apparently. He's been plagued with migraines from an early age, as well, and often needs painkillers to get through them.
Still, while he might not exactly be book-smart, he's got a few things he absolutely excels at. Aside from doing vocals he plays a number of instruments, including the banjo, although his specialty is anything with a keyboard. He's very well-versed in the technical aspect of the instruments and he even builds his own synths and synth-adjacent equipment, like the Donkatron (a machine meant to defend against a whale... made out of a keyboard, of course). He writes a lot of the music, even if he doesn't always get credit, and has even written an entire album by himself.
Of course, being in a band, music is going to be a big part of his life, but that's not the entirety of his artistic or entertainment-related endeavors. He's also a graffiti artist, although he hasn't done as much of it as he used to, and he enjoys playing Pong. He loves horror movies, especially zombie movies, although he is also a fan of Napoleon Dynamite. While he's always enjoyed being scared by horror movies, he wasn't so happy with having his fear of whales confronted, although exposure seems to have helped him out with that recently, hopefully for the better. Unfortunately that exposure involved needing to eat the whale he was terrified of to survive, but, well, it seems to have done something, at least.
Like many famous people he easily gets himself involved in a number of charitable causes, although sometimes the legitimacy of said causes might be a little off. On one hand, he might stand with people with the intent of freeing Tibet, while on the other, he might want to send all his money to that nice prince who sent him an email and need to get Noodle to intervene. Whatever it is, his heart's in the right place. He's said to be a Buddhist, although how 'devout' he might be is up for debate. He tries.
The band works together like a sort of dysfunctional family at best. 2D and Noodle are like siblings, and tend to be the ones who get along the most. 2D was generally the older brother, but as Noodle's grown up, sometimes she acts like the older sister. 2D and Russel often get along as well, although sometimes they have their disagreements. And sometimes they really have their disagreements. Usually 2D really deserves it, though; he can really get on people's nerves, and it's not always an accident.
But when it comes down to it, most of 2D's character development seems to be tied to Murdoc, the man who started it all. At first, he was sure Murdoc had saved his life, but as time went on he realized things were quite different, and gained himself an ego. And then the band got back together, he had to deal with Murdoc again, and his ego got tempered a little... which is a common theme. Between albums, he tends to embark on a number of strange journeys, always coming back (not always by choice) and having to deal with Murdoc again. He'll go from periods of confidence to periods of a lack thereof, and it all seems to be centered around Murdoc's presence. Lately, thanks to Murdoc being in jail, 2D's finally seemed to stabilize a bit.
With his newfound confidence and sudden awakening of leadership skills, he might finally be ready to be in charge. What happens next is anybody's guess. It's a little terrifying, really. But hey, that's Gorillaz, isn't it?
